Welcome Margo Lee Ham!

We welcomed Margo Lee Ham into our family on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 2:22pm. She weighed 6lbs 5oz and was 18.5" long. We are all doing well and big sister Paige is enjoying her new role. More to come later but here are a few pictures. She looks a lot like her big sis!

More photos can be found on our gallery. http://gallery.me.com/jessicaleeham#gallery

Zoe

One of my favorite pictures of Zoe. Her favorite spot was laying on our bed and she would snuggle with all of us for hours.

Well, we went from the roller coaster high of learning our baby girl would be making her appearance in just six days to finding out later that same day that our firstborn, Zoe, was extremely sick. Zoe had been having trouble keeping her food down beginning back in August. Around the same time, she woke up from a nap with one of her eyes somewhat rolled in the back of her head. Drew took her to the ER since it was a Saturday and they ran lots of tests and came back with the diagnosis of Horner's Syndrome. Basically, this was a symptom of other issues but nothing could be clearly identified. We followed up with our normal vet and they also had trouble finding a cause for the Horner's Syndrome and the vomiting. In the meantime, she seemed to be happy and feeling ok so we decided to just make some adjustments to her food and see how it went. Everything, including her eye, seemed to improve so we just kept watch.

Unfortunately last week things seemed to get worse again. She wasn't keeping much of anything down so we scheduled an appointment with the vet again. Of course, when Drew took her there she acted fine and the vet couldn't see anything wrong with her. Later that day after coming home, she continued to get sick after each meal and even after drinking water. So, back to the vet they went and after more x-rays and test, it was determined that she had Mega-Esophagus. Apparently, the esophagus gets stretched out like a deflated balloon and doesn't propel the food and water into the stomach like it should. Unfortunately, there's no cure. It is manageable with medication, feeding more frequently (6-8 times per day), restricting water intake, and feeding the dog in an upright position. Some people online even made special chairs for their dogs to sit in while eating. We figured it was worth a shot so Thursday she came back home with lots of medication and special instructions. Unfortunately, she would not take any of the medicine or eat any food and did not appreciate Drew holding her up after every drink she took. And to top it off, she was still getting sick. It was quickly becoming obvious that this was not our normal energetic, easily excitable dog. As Friday came and went and she was still not eating, we began to realize that she knew her time had come and we had to accept it as well. Drew made the tough call to the vet to schedule an appointment for the next day and we began to say our final goodbyes. Early the next morning, after a long night of lots of love, tears, and pain, we said farewell to the most loving and loyal companion we've ever known.

I always knew that one day the time would come that Zoe would not be in our lives but I had always hoped that she would grow old and when the time was right, just slip away peacefully. Never did I want to be the one to make the decision for her. Unfortunately, it would have been selfish of us to let her go on suffering. I think she was actually trying to make the decision easier on us by not eating. Nonetheless, seeing her go was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. Of course, my sadness is compounded by guilt as I question if we did all we could for her, if she knew how much we loved her and how much she impacted our lives. For those that knew her, Zoe was by no means an easy dog. She was afraid of storms and fireworks, whined for food and had a tail that could be used as a deadly weapon but she could cuddle with the best of them, was always overly excited to see us come home, and provided unconditional love like her heart was going to explode. And it was all of these things that made us love her that much more. We can only hope that we did the right thing at the right time and that in the end, she understood.

I'm not sure how long it will take for my heart to heal. Right now, the grief comes in waves. When I open the door to see only one wagging tail or when I walk by our bed and don't see her peeking up from under our blankets. I know that someday it will get easier and I'll be able to focus on all the wonderful memories she provided our family. There were definitely plenty of those memories. Thank you, Zoe! We love you!

Rosie and Zoe, best buddies, waiting to welcome Paige home from the hospital. I know Rosie is missing her sister as much as the rest of us right now.

Zoe was not much of an outdoor dog but when she found a warm spot on the concrete or grass, she loved to bask in the sun.

Paige and Zoe relaxing together. When we told Paige Zoe had gone to Heaven to be with Jesus, she responded by saying, "Zoe is in outer space."

The Big Day

Last Wednesday Drew and I went to my 37 week check up at the doctor's office and were surprised when the doctor agreed to induce on Tuesday, December 13th at my 38 week mark. I guess because of my history of high blood pressure, they don't want to wait around too long in case something like that could creep up again. Of course, I didn't argue! I'm now at 3cm, 80%, and -2 station so I'm hoping labor will be slightly quicker this time (eight hours with Paige). So, we headed out of the office with instructions to check into the hospital on Tuesday at 5am. It feels like I've been pregnant forever so it's nice to finally have an end in sight! Of course, I have lists and lists of things to get done before then! More later...

Baby Update

I realize it's been a while since I've updated on the progress of baby #2 so here's a quick recap of the past few weeks. At 31 weeks (October 25th) I had yet another ultrasound to take a look at the location of the placenta. Finally, good news! It had moved up enough to allow for a normal delivery and baby girl looks great. They estimated her weight at 3lbs 12 oz, which was in the 49th percentile. The doctor was pleased with the results but asked that I stay on bedrest until 34 weeks, just to be cautious. I also asked that we do a color doppler ultrasound to check for the possibility of a dangerous condition that can be more previlant in pregnancies with placenta previa and accessory lobe placentas, both of which I had. He agreed and scheduled it for the next week (32 weeks).

The color doppler ultrasound was done in the radiology department of the hospital the following week and everything looked great. They confirmed that the placenta was out of the way and there was no evidence of any other problems. Baby girl was estimated at 4lbs 7oz (give or take 11oz). This seemed like a big difference from the previous week's estimate but either way, she's healthy and that's all that matters!

My next appointment was at 34 weeks, November 16th. It was actually a pretty uneventful appointment other than the fact that I was FINALLY released from my 12+ week bedrest sentence. Of course, I was thrilled to have so much freedom but at the same time, a little nervous about rocking the boat. Obviously, there were times I never expected to make it to 34 weeks and I didn't want to push myself too much and cause any unnecessary problems. But I took my ticket to freedom and decided to ease back into my everyday responsibilities. I got home from my appointment and literally walked around the house aimlessly, not knowing where to start or how to spend my time. How quickly that question was answered! We were finally able to begin putting the baby's room together and getting all the other gear organized. How nice it's been to feel productive and see progress. It makes it real!

So here I am at 36 weeks and 1 day. I had yet another doctor appointment today and this one included my first exam. I am 2-3 cm dilated, 70% effaced, and baby is head down and fairly low (he didn't give me a stat on this one). I was thrilled to hear that I had already made progress. While I know it's possible for women to walk around like this for weeks, it gives me hope that she'll make her appearance before Christmas! The doctor encouraged me to get out and walk since this can move things along. How ironic that for five months I was instructed to lay low with no exercise and now it's the only thing that may get me out of this pregnancy on time!

Needless to say, we are so excited to welcome our new tiny piglet in the next few weeks. More to come soon (hopefully)!

Videos

I've officially been on bed rest for 12 weeks now and while I can't say that I've caught up on all my reading for the past few years, I have successfully organized and posted all of our videos. This was quite the task, considering many of them were stuck on an external hard drive and I was unable to view or edit them on our new Mac computer. They are finally all converted and have been posted on our gallery for all to see. It brought back such wonderful memories of our baby girl and it's evident how quickly she's grown. We're looking forward to creating more wonderful memories to come with Paige and her baby sister.

Here are a few of my favorite videos...

Of course, they're all pretty cute in my opinion. The rest can be seen at http://gallery.me.com/jessicaleeham#gallery. Just scroll to the bottom of the page.

Baby Shower

Some of the girls in the neighborhood were so sweet to host a baby shower for myself and another neighbor, who is also due her second child (a boy) just a week after my due date. The theme was all about cravings that you have during pregnancy. They made the cutest decorations centered around ice cream, using pink and blue colors. The hosts also made delicious food for the occasion, meatballs, french fries, artichoke dip, fried pickles, and sausage wontons. Of course, there were root beer floats and cake pops for dessert.

The guests were encouraged to bring a sample of foods that they craved while pregnant with their own children. Needless to say, there were plenty of goodies! We received some great necessities for baby girl, which helps me feel a little more prepared. It was a fun afternoon and so nice to be able to get out and catch up with some great neighbors.

Halloween 2011

Paige celebrated Halloween this year by dressing as Alice in Wonderland. It was actually a costume I found on clearance at Target last year but I think it seemed to suit her well and she enjoyed it. She wore it for her last soccer game on the 30th, trick or treating on the 31st, and a school party on the 1st so by the time she was done with it, we had more than gotten our money's worth!

Unfortunately, I couldn't join Paige and Daddy trick or treating but they met up with the Ernsbergers (Cole made the sweetest zookeeper) to hit a few houses in the neighborhood before coming home to eat candy in bed with Mommy. Of course, I enjoyed this part! Paige had a great time celebrating the occasion multiple times and we can't wait until Halloween next year when we have another little monster to add to the mix!

Paige chose a kitty cat on the big pumpkin (the pumpkin for Mommy and Daddy) and a happy face on the little pumpkin she picked for herself and baby sister.

Birthday Party!

For Paige's third birthday, we celebrated with a small Toy Story themed party on October 15th. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go all out with decorations or food this time around but I don't think she noticed one bit! We had pizza, cupcakes, and beautiful weather so the kids could play outside. Paige's Aunts and Uncles on the Ham side sent her a bounce house that arrived just in time for the party. Paige and her friends loved it! A special thanks to my Mom for sewing a Toy Story dress for Paige to wear on her big day. It looked adorable on her and she was so excited to wear it!

Happy Birthday, Paige! We love you!

Paige's 3rd Birthday!

It's still hard for me to believe, but Paige celebrated her third birthday on October 3rd. I know I say this with every birthday but where did the time go? It really feels like we just celebrated her second birthday a few weeks ago!

We had been talking about Paige's birthday for weeks so the morning of she woke up and asked, "Is it my birthday NOW?" Yes, finally! She started the day by hanging out with me in bed while Drew attended a morning meeting at work. Once Daddy came home, they headed to Chuck E Cheese for lunch with Paige's friend Maggie and Maggie's daddy, Matt. They had a blast playing the games together.

After a Chuck E Cheese came a nice, long nap followed by pizza, cake, and ice cream with the Iten's. Jodee and Addie were sweet enough to make Paige an adorable (and delicious) cupcake birthday cake, which she loved. Paige opened a few gifts that night too. She has been absolutely obsessed with playing doctor lately so Drew and I bought her a Vet Kit just like Addie's and she was thrilled. We've been playing doctor on a daily basis since. We also gave her a Tag Jr Reading System, to encourage her love of books. She was also extremely excited to receive her first Barbie from Grandma and Grandpa. A Barbie was the only response she would give when asked what she would like for her birthday. I hope she loves them as much as I did!

Here's what Paige is up to at age three:
  • Weighs 28.6lbs, which is in the 25th percentile (up just 4lbs from one year ago). Height is also in the 25th percentile (Drew can't remember the exact measurement from the doctor). I guess she's proportionately small!
  • Sleeping from 8:30/9:00pm-7:00/7:30am but unfortunately, still not sleeping through the night on a regular basis. As a general rule, she wakes up and cries for us at least once during that time. Napping 1:30/2:00pm-4:30pm so this long stretch makes up for the lack of sleep at night.
  • Still refuses to use the potty like a big girl. She hasn't really shown much interest and since we don't have the time to devote to it right now, that's ok. I'm hoping I can concentrate on it in the next few months.
  • Remains a Daddy's girl, especially since Daddy is providing all of her care lately.
  • Has a stubborn personality and often pouts or whines to get her way. This is probably the toughest battle we have to fight with her. Unfortunately, I'm limited in the amount of time outs I can dole out while laying in bed. Guess we'll deal with it on the other side of all that is going on.
  • Loves to watch "shows." She would watch TV all day if we let her. Her favorites right now are Bubble Guppies and the Toy Story movies.
  • Has grown quite the imagination. Computer cords become dog leashes, the couch a school bus, our closet an airplane. It's so fun to see what she comes up with!
  • As I mentioned above, her absolute favorite is playing doctor right now. I guess this makes sense, given all of my doctor appointments. We take turns in the doctor, nurse, and patient roles. She says she wants to be a doctor when she grows up and all this play has really helped her fear of actually going to the doctor's office.
  • Paige also enjoys playing with her toy food and grocery cart. Often, she loads up all of her food, plates and cups into bags, throws them into her grocery cart and comes clomping into the living room wearing her play shoes and ready to serve us dinner. She's become known as the bag lady. It creates quite the mess but she loves it!
While Paige can definitely test our patience, she is a sweet, loving, and well behaved little girl. We love watching her grow into such a fun person of her own!

28 Weeks!

Well, I've finally made it to my third trimester! I'm still on bed rest but the doctor has been encouraging me to try a few small activities a week. While this is good news, I'm a little apprehensive about rocking the boat too much. I've been feeling pretty good lately and don't want to jinx whatever seems to be working. I did venture to Tom and Jodee's last week for dinner and to Paige's soccer game this past Sunday. It was nice to have a change of scenery!

I've been seeing the doctor weekly just so he can keep an eye on me and while I feel like I'm there all the time, I really don't mind because it's reassuring to know that everything is on track. My latest ultrasound was at 26 weeks and my placenta was still low. It had moved slightly but not enough. The doctor is still hopeful and will check it again at 32 weeks, which is my next small goal.

I haven't been great about taking weekly or even monthly belly photos, I guess mostly because I often don't get out of my sweatpants. Here are the few that I've taken. Ignore my hair; I haven't been able to go to the salon and it's been 10 weeks. It's getting ugly!!

Grandma To the Rescue!

My Mom was nice enough to take some time off of work to come down and help us a few weeks ago. She was able to stay for nine days and it was absolutely wonderful! Not only did she help with all of the cooking, cleaning, shopping, organizing, and sewing, but Paige LOVED having undivided attention! It was so nice to feel productive, even though I was laying on the couch. She finished the bedding and curtains for the baby's room and pillows and curtains for Paige's room. All of these are projects I had grand plans of completing myself before my bed rest sentence. Also during her visit, Drew was able to put some much needed time in at work and even enjoy some down time of his own. It was both physically and mentally helpful for both Drew and I! Thanks, Mom!

Unfortunately, I didn't get many photos of her visit but here are a couple that I did catch before she left.
